In this lesson, I will introduce Ss to family vocabulary through a listening text. Ss will do gist and specific listening tasks and learn possessive 's in the context of family vocabulary, They will follow this up with a short speaking activity about their own families.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice family vocabulary

Subsidiary Aims

  • To intoduce Ss to possessive 's
  • To get Ss to practice listening


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show picture of her own family and elicit relevant vocabulary. T will ask Ss about their families through simple questions to engage

Listening for gist (4-5 minutes) • To provide Ss with less challanging gist listening

T will show the family picture on the board and give Ss the HOs. Students will listen to the text and fill in the names Ss check in pairs WCF

Listening for details (7-8 minutes) • To provide Ss with more challenging detailed listening

T will give the HOs. Ss listen again and choose the correct words. Check in pairs (T can play a second time, if necessary)

Pronunciation practice 2 (1-2 minutes) • To practice pronunciation

Ss listen and T drills

Language clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify family vocabulary via a chart

T will give" complete the table" HOs and pictures and Ss will work in pairs T will work on the chart on the board and give clarification (WCF)

Controlled vocab. practice (4-5 minutes) • To practice famiy vocab.

T will give make sentences HO Ss work individually and check in pairs WCF

Presentation (Grammar) (6-7 minutes) • To introduce possessive 's

T will write incorrect sentences to elicit possessive 's rules and provide sufficient clarification T will give a HO of possessive 's tips to study at home

Grammar/Vocabulary Practice (5-6 minutes) • To get Ss to practice family vocabulary and possessive 's

-T groups Ss and gives one envelope containing strips of papers with incorrect sentences on- to each group saying the first group to finish first will be the winner -Ss take it in turns to take one sentence from the envelope and correct the possessive 's use -T gives an answer key for Ss to check and take home

If time activity (Speaking practice) (5-7 minutes) • To practice speaking in the context of family

Ss will be given family tree HO to draw their own family tree quickly and will talk about their families with their partners (Ss will be asked to change pairs if time allows)
