Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to provide sentences talking about past events using both regular and irregular verbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice the past simple tense in the context of to talking about their last weekend.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Draw a simple timeline on the board and mark the middle point with an arrow and write the word "Today". Ask students what day is it today and then write the day and date on the board. - Ask students what day is it going to be tomorrow, then write down the day to the write side of the word Today mentioning that this is tomorrow. - Ask students "That means that yesterday was?" and write down the day to the left side of the word Today explaining that this was yesterday. - start explaining that anything that will happen tomorrow will be in the future, and anything that happened before today is in the past. - Explain that the past can also include last week, last month or weekend or any events that happened before today.

Presentation (10-15 minutes) • To provide a clear explanation for how we can sue the past simple tense using regular and irregular verbs

- Explain that to speak about previous events or activities, we have to change the form of the verb to the past. - In order to change the form of the verb to the past we have 2 ways, the first one is adding "ed" at the end of the verb to travel with it to the past. * Examples: Walk - Walked (I walked to school yesterday) travel - travelled (I travelled with my family last summer) Play - Played ( I played Football with my friend last Saturday) - Play a video explaining how we change the form of the verb by adding "ed" to make in the past ( link to vide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxl28KQOHy4) - Explain that some verbs are different and have to change completely to be in the past form, these are called irregular verbs. *Examples: Go -Went ( I went to the park on Friday) Eat- Ate ( She ate salad for lunch yesterday) Sleep - Slept ( I slept on my bed last night) See -Saw ( He saw a giraffe in the zoo last winter) - Practice with the minions beach party video quiz (Video Link: https://en.islcollective.com/video-lessons/minion-vacation-video-simple-past)

Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- Solve the past simple worksheet (Match the verbs in present and past tenses) - Worksheet 1 (See Appendix) - Solve worksheet 2 - Complete the sentences by choosing the correct form of the verb.

Less-Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

- Play Tic Tac Toe game, divide the class into 4 teams of 5, each two teams will play together. Draw a normal tic tac toe layout and in each square write the infinitive of a verb, for a team to be able to place an X or O in a square they have to come up with a sentence using the past form of the verb in the squares they want. (See Appendix for layout and example)

Free Practice (10-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Find some one who worksheet: Divide the class into 4 groups, each group has a copy of the worksheet (See appendix), they're supposed to find answers for questions in the sheet like" find someone who watched a movie last night" so they have to ask the other group "did you watch a movie last night? What was the name of the movie. - Divide students into pairs, ask each student to ask their partner what they did last night or last weekend, then each student will have to say what their partner did last weekend.
