Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for inviting and making arrangements

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used to invite people and make arrangements covering meaning, form and pronunciation
  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about inviting people and making arrangements
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of inviting people and making arrangements

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will use an activity that will consist of 2 questions. This will help introduce Ss to the topic of the day: giving a suspect description. T will use Google Slides presentation to show the questions with images related to the subject, to help them visualize. Questions on Google Slides that elicit personal response: • Think about the last time you went out on a weekend with someone. What did you do? • Was that planned or spontanous? T will ask the questions one by one. Ss will share their response with the class. Teacher will nominate Ss to hear their answers and make a brief comment on them.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

For this stage T will play an audio for Ss to listen for gist. Before playing the audio T will set the task. T will show some questions on the board (Google Slides) and allow Ss a brief moment to read them. Questions: 1 When are Carol and Matt having people round for dinner? 2 Can Juliet and Ben come for dinner? 3 What do Matt and Ben arrange to do? For instrucions, T will contextualize: "You're going to listen to two conversations between friends...." T will tell Ss to listen for the general idea and afterwards anwer the questions in a Google Doc (the link will be sent through the Zoom Chat). The audio will be played twice. T will ICQ: - How many times will the audio be played? Twice. - Are you going to write your answers in the Zoom Chat or in the Google Doc? Google Doc. T will monitor the completion of the task in the Google Doc. After they all finish we'll have OCFB and check answers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will share a Google Jamboard on the screen and share the link for Ss to acces and edit it via Zoom Chat. The task will be to match certain pieces of language used in the audio to their description. e.g: Are you doing anything on Saturday? - Aking about peoples arrangements. T will demonstrate (before sharing the link) so that all students can understand. After they all finish, there will be small OCFB.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

For this part T will use the previous Google Jamboard completed by the Ss as the example for Meaning, and dig into it a bit further. All examples will come from the Google Jamboard activity. T will explain Form in the board with the same examples. For pronunciation T will take some examples drill them twice and ask Ss to repeat it back. T will also focus on linking between words and intonation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

For this task Ss will have to fill in the gaps to a conversation in a multiple option Google Forms (link will be shared through the chat). Ss will do this individually. T will ICQ: Where will you select your answers? Google Forms When Ss finish they will be asked to put a "Thumbs Up" in the Zoom. After finishing the task Ss will be put in B.O.R to check their answers in pairs. When that is done, we'll check the answers together and OCFB

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will set the instruction: Think about something you would like to do this weekend. (Example: skydiving, go to a restaurant, take a roadtrip...) Invite your partner to do that with you! Workout your schedules, see who is more busy. Arrange a date, time and place to meet. Ss wil be sent to B.O.R to talk in pairs. T will monitor. When they are done, we'll have OCFB and DEC
