Description

In this lesson students will be given the opportunity for reading for specific details and practicing "there is / there are" via speaking.

Materials

Abc New Headway Elementary Student's Book
Abc A Printout of the American Flag
Abc Definitions Activity Prepared by the teacher
Abc A Printout of the Oval Office

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson students will have practiced reading for specific details

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of this lesson students will have practiced speaking using "there is / there are"

Procedure

Lead In (3-5 minutes) • To get students to talk about what they know about the USA

Stick the American Flag on the whiteboard and ask students what they know about the USA. Try to get the answer "White House"

Picture Description (2-3 minutes) • To enable Ss practice their speaking skills via picture description

Stick the picture on the board. Ask Ss what they see in the picture and try to get as many answers as possible.

Pre-teach vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To introduce the new vocabulary

Divide Ss into 3 groups of 4 students and tell them they will be doing a matching activity. Give 3 cut-ups to every group ask them to match them to possible answers. When the groups finish their parts, switch 2 students from each group with another group. Then ask Ss to read the answers if needed and ask some ICQs.

Reading for detail (7-8 minutes) • To introduce the text to Ss

Ask students to think about the sentences in pairs for a minute. Ask them what they think about the sentences. Ask them to read the text and check their answers. Give them 4-5 minutes to read and ask them to check their answers in pairs.

Reading for detail (7-8 minutes) • To make Ss more familiar with the text

Ask Ss to look at the second sentence at the "answer the questions" exercise and elicit "exactly". Then ask them to read and answer the text. Give them 5-6 minutes. Then ask them to check their answers in groups.

Scanning (4-5 minutes) • To practice scanning

Divide the students into 2 groups and assign 4 of the numbers to the first group and assign the remaining 4 numbers to the other group. Ask ICQs to see if they understand the activity. Then tell them to say what those figures refer to.

Speaking (3-4 minutes) • To enable students to ask and answer the questions of "there is / there are"

Match every students with a new partner Ask them to ask and answer questions about the things in the White House

Vocabulary (optional) (2-3 minutes) • To enable students learn some vocabulary, especially verbs

Ask Ss to do the activity in pairs After they finish ask them to check in groups of 4

Speaking (4-5 minutes) • To enable the students create their dream room

Ask Ss to work in pairs and tell them they will be the president and the first lady Ask them to create their own dream oval office Then ask them to say / read their sentences
