Upper-Intermediate level


In this lesson, students will practice writing by writing an article about a place they love


Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of an article in the context of a place you love

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for describing places you love


Lead-in (3 minutes) • To introduce Ss to the context

Share my screen with the Google Slides with the images and title. Tell Ss that the pictures are of the town where my grandparent live, and a couple things I love about that place. Ask Ss if there is any place they love, and what they love about it.

Gist task and reading (5 minutes) • To show Ss an example text, and chech their general understanding of it

Share link to the text with Ss Tell Ss that it's a text about the place I love, and that later on, they will write something similar. Ask them to think about the gist question. Give them 2 min to read the text. Ask them the gist question (Would you visit this place?)

Text analysis (5 minutes) • To have Ss analyze the style and structure of the text and provide useful laguage for them

Share my screen with Google Slides on the Style and Structures. Elicit answers from Ss before showing them on the screen. Clarify any questions about structure. Show Ss the Useful Language, and ask if all they are familiar with all the phrases/have any questions about the language.

Writing (12 minutes) • To give Ss time to write their own article

Tell Ss that they will now write a text with this structure, about a place they love. Give Ss 20 seconds to think about the question on the screen (What is a place you love?) Give Ss 10 min to write their text.

Publishing (10 minutes) • To give Ss a chance to share their work with peers, as well as correct and check each other's work

Tell Ss that they will now go into BoR to screenshare their writing with each other, so they can read and discuss each other's writing. They can comment on both content and language accuracy, and also change their text according to feedback. Send Ss to BoR for 10 min

Feedback and DEC (10 minutes) • To give OCFB to a student that volunteers, and to check mistakes with DEC

Ask for a volunteer or nominate in student to screenshare their work withh the whole class. Wait a few seconds for everyone to read, and comment on the content of the student's text. Do DEC with 4 mistakes and 2 good phrases I picked up from the class.
