Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about technological achievements in the context of language used by common people

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a talking with a small group of people in the context of close friends
  • To provide clarification of important discoveries in human life in the context of informal conversation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus Ss attention on Google slide #1. Ask: What is an achievement? (Answer: to reach a goal or win a victory) Ask CCQ: Do you know sb that have achieved sth unusual? (Answer: nominate 2 Ss to elicit some suggestions) Ask CCQ: How many types of achievements do you know? (Answer: work related awards, volunteer related awards, scholarships, qualifications)

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Work on meaning of challenging words: running water, juggler, prodigy. Share activity on Google slide: nominates SS to match words to photos and definition using arrows. Running water /ˌrʌn.ɪŋ, ˈwɑː.t̬ɚ/ Ask: What uses do you give to running water. (Answer: cooking, washing, and toilet flushing). Ask CCQ: Is running water drinkable? (Answer: No, it is advisable that we drink purified water. Pay cheque /peɪ, tʃek/ Ask: What material is a check physically made of? (Answer: is made of paper) Battle on /ˈbæt.əl, ɑːn/ Ask: Does it means to take a rest and then continue doing your stuff? (Answer: no, you keep doing your best effort) Ask CCQ: how is it called in MX? Bring down /brɪŋ, daʊn/ Ask: Can a gossip or fake new bring a politician down? (Yes, it helps to give him a bad reputation) FCQ: Can “bring” be combined with other adverbs? (Answer: Yes, bring it back, bring it up, bring it off) Work on form and pronunciation of same words. Post Google Forms link in chat. 1.False, running water is an uncountable noun. 2. True: Pay cheque is British and Paycheck is AmE. 3. The verb bring has 1 syllable (Indicate Ss the stress of the verb, choral drill). 4. Battle on and bring down are examples of phrasal verbs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Share Listening task 1 in chat, give 2min for reading the task. Ask Ss to listen and answer the questions related to the audio clip. Check answers with the class. Ask Ss how many speakers are in audio clip? (Answer: five) 1.The wonder of having running water in our house. 2.Paying bills and cheques can be done from home using the Internet. 3.Steve is a role model in Britain due to his attitude against his diabetes. 4.The speaker is surprised by the achievement of the Stonehenge construction. 5.The British empire was brought down by an outstanding leader.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Share listening task 2 in chat and give Ss time to read questions, then play recording again. Ss compare answers in pairs in BOR. Check answers OCFB. Encourage Ss to listen carefully and ignore words they don't know that aren't relevant. 1. True: Having running water at home is a basic scientific achievement that makes a difference in people's life 2. False: The development of the internet can be classified as a great political advance 3. True: The reason to admire Steve Redgrave is his brave to keep training for the Olympic Games while he was in a health treatment. 4. True: Stonehenge is amazing for the techniques used 4 thousand years ago for its construction. 5. False: Rarely Gandhi has used violence to reach their objectives.

Post-Reading/Listening (16-18 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Draw Ss attention to the questions on the Google Slide: 1. Could you name 2 uses of the internet that are present in your daily life? 2. Would your life be the same tomorrow without those 2 inventions from internet? 3. Name 1 invention of the internet that you think it’s going to be created in the future. Conduct feedback on the task. Use Jamboard to give DEC.
