Description

Materials

Abc Cutting Edge - Upper Intermediate

Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a movie review in the context of a recent movie seen.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for useful phrases in the context of movie reviews.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Have you seen any good movies recently? OCFB

Exposure (5-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Take 1 minute to read my review about The Hunger Games. Any words you don't understand? How is my review structured? 1. Title 2. Director 3. Where/when 4. Stars 5. Plot 6. Who it would appeal to

Useful Language (5-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Ask if there are any questions on meaning about the phrases. (soundtrack, stars, directed, played by) Big focus will be placed on form for this lesson. Elicit and have students match the complements with the phrases. Materials: Cutting Edge p. 135

Productive Task(s) (17-17 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Choose a movie to write a review. 5 minutes to find the info needed. 10 minutes to write their review. I will monitor and provide active feedback on grammar, lexis and spelling.

Feedback and Error Correction (15-15 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Students will take 5 minutes to peer edit, reviewing for the following: Does the review have a title? Does the review include information about directors/stars? Does the review describe the plot of the movie? Does the review share who the movie would appeal to? Does the review include useful language (at least 3)? What useful language is used? (If time allows, I will have students read out loud the reviews they reviewed, and share if they think the movie is interesting). Which movie would you like to see? What more information could you add to the review if it were 200 words? Positive and negative points, more info about plot/stars. Leaving a lot of time for DEC, to focus on common errors identified and fixed during the monitoring phase.
