In this lesson, we will review some functional phrases for giving advice.

Materials

Abc Cutting Edge - Upper Intermediate

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for giving suggestions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of giving suggestions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

OCFB: Have you ever wanted to study or teach in an English-speaking country? Materials: Cutting Edge Teacher's Book page 52

Exposure (4-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will read for gist, thinking about the following two questions: What does Stefan want advice on? Which countries are suggested in the five replies? OCFB to provide context. Materials: Cutting Edge Student Book page 70

Highlighting (4-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Underline the phrases that are used to give advice. Show answer key and ask if they got them all. Materials: Cutting Edge Student Book page 70

Clarification (13-13 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MAF: Do you have any questions about these phrases? Which of these are questions? Which of these are commands? Are these formal or informal? Pronunciation: Play 1 minute audio to hear through the phrases once. Go through the slides to elicit sentence stress and intonation, highlighting any oddities about the phrases.

Controlled Practice (6-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Fill in the blank using the phrases. 3 minutes to complete, check in pairs if time. Go over as a class.

Free Practice (15-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Think of two problems that you need suggestions for. Share with partner. Change BORs for change in partners. OCFB DEC
