TP 5 GIVING ADVISE
To introduce and provide practise of speaking (for fluency) for showing interest in what one says.
To get students to introduce new fixed phrases into their vocabulary and for them to know when to use which one
Procedure (37-47 minutes)
T - Ss "Good morning everyone, *Introduces self briefly*, it's good to see you, how are you doing today?" "What did I just do when I started the class? What was the first thing I said?" (asked how they were doing, said its good to see you) "What is that called?" (greeting) T shares Nearpod link with Ss. SLIDE 1 T asks Ss "What is greeting?" "Is a greeting supposed to be nice things or not? (yes) "When do we use them?" (meeting people (1st time or not), phone? "How do we say hello to people here in Mexico? What about in other parts of the world? SLIDE 2 +"What do we say when we meet someone for the first time or when we encounter someone we've known for a while? I want you to think about that for a couple seconds and then I want you to post your ideas on the board in the next slide." SLIDE3 *Working with what's on the board* T - Ss "Now tell me what other verbal/ non verbal things we do for greeting people?" "Which of these are formal/neutral/colloquial phrases?
T to Ss "Very well,SLIDE 4 now I have these 2 pictures, what do you see?" "What are they doing" "Do they look like they know each other Why/not?" SLIDE 5 T to Ss "We will now listen to the conversation between these people to find out wether they do know each other or not. *Audio* "Did they all knew each other?" (No) "Who met who?" (The man met one of the women)
SLIDE 6 I have a google forms for you, you have to click on wether you think the sentence can be used when you first meet someone or when you have known the person for a bit now, you have 2 minutes to complete that. Any questions about that?" "Are there any questions regarding when these phrases can be used? *explains if yes* Ok Ss(x) when do we use 'Long time no see'? Ss2(x) do we use 'How do you do?' for people we know already or people we are meeting for the first time? Ss(3x), now what about How are things?" SLIDE 7/8 "I now have a short audio for you to listen to, pay attention to the phrases that they use because There is an exercise afterwards." *audio and fill in blanks* "If you need me to play the audio again please tell me" WHITEBOARD (also nominate students individually) "Now let's work on some of the phrases here, 'What a lovely surprise!' repeat... What words are stressed? What about surprise how does it sound? Do we stress the beginning or the end? (end) 'great to see you' repeat... What words are stressed? (great, see) 'how nice!' (rep) what does that ! do? (brings the intonation up) 'That is fantastic news' (rep) Stress? (fantastic) 'Brilliant!' (rep) sound plain? or exited?
T to Ss "did you notice that there was a short conversation after the people from the recordings said hello? Do you know what that is called? (small talk, catching up, etc) "What do we use it for? (to seem interested in the other person, for politeness) It is important to be polite and be interested (preferably really interested and not just faking) in these conversations because it creates a friendly atmosphere." "Now I want you to work in pairs, I will put you in some BR, You will have to greet your peer and make a little bit of small talk with them, you can ask about their day, or their job. I want you to react to what your partner tells you, alright? you have 10 minutes for this. Any questions before we begin?"
Check for mistakes while on freer practice and write them down and then present them to Ss and correct. Maybe ask students what is wrong with the sentences/phrases. Say bye-bye.
