Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in speaking emphatically in the context of talking about loved ones

Subsidiary Aims

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Will bring up the topic of inviting people over. Will ask Ss if they prefer to have family or friends over and why. Will share my screen with the Google Slides and ask a S to read the statements (one S per statement) and other Ss have to give a thumbs up or down if they agree/disagree with the statement. Will ask 3 Ss to share their reasoning

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will play the audio track for Ss. I will ask Ss to pay attention to how the people feel about certain things. I will ask Ss tu reflect on how they comunicate this. I will then show Ss how the people phrase their feelings, and play audio again so they can look out for them.

Useful Language (6-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will show Ss the Useful Language, and I will give an example of how to use it by talking about a family member or friend. I will ask Ss if any words or phrases are unfamiliar, and clarify the language. Go over emphasis and linking on the phrases, model and drill Ss on it. I will encourage Ss to give examples about their own family members or friends.

Productive Task(s) (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will ask Ss to think of a person they are close with, and how this person makes them feel, what qualities this person has, etc. I will show Ss examples of people they can use. I will tell Ss to tell each other about this person, using as much of the Useful Language as they can. I will switch them after 5 min. I will have them repeat the activity with a different partner.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Have Ss share what they talked about in the activity, and share it with the class. Correct any mistakes I have heard Ss make. If no mistakes are made, I will make up incorrect phrases and ask Ss to correct them.
