Description

• To provide listening practice for gist and detail in the context of achievements and unusual achievements. Class Profile The students in this upper-intermediate class are young adults and adults (age 18-31). They hold office and professional jobs and are mainly interested in English to help them develop their careers. They are interested in discussing topics of relevance in their lives, such as technology, social networking, and current affairs.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about learning and teaching in the context of Different ways that people teach children and teens things

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Presentation to the class in the context of Students tell a story of something they learned, describing who taught them and how.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students in pairs discuss the questions and then report to the class. There will be only two minutes in the breakrooms to discuss this before sharing it with the class as a whole. Answers are open and they will vary.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will do the word wall matching activity where they will have the opportunity to create meaning that will be useful for the listening activity. Students will practice pronunciation using the Kahoot activity and form altogether. The words to match come with a picture and a definition. While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students enter the flipgrip link and individually they will read the instructions. Teacher checks that the activity is clear. Students then listen to the audio and complete the table in the flipgrip to focus on general and specific information. Students will listen to 5 speakers and they will talk about the achievement and the category from ex 1 such as Technological achievement, artistic achievement, scientific achievement, etc. Students compare in pairs and then back to the class. Answers Speaker 1=Running water, cold and hot Speaker 2=Internet/communication and banking Speaker 3=Olympian Redgrave 9Rower with 5 Olympic gold medals and diabetes. Speaker 4=Stonehenge/how they moved these blocks from Wales 4,000 years ago. Speaker 5=Ghandi. Brought down the most powerful empire peacefully

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students listen now for a second time and they will answer the questions in the word document. They will then in pairs compare their answers and write them in the chat room. Teacher monitors before OCFB

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will respond to the text exercise 3 d. They will have the opportunity to talk about their opinion on the achievements discussed in the listening but they can choose an achievement of their own. They have 3 minutes to gather information before sharing it in teams through breakrooms. Teacher monitors and prepares for DEC. Write error on jamboard and helps to assign a task for homework.
