Description

In this reading lesson, learners will have a text about starfish and they will practice the four skills, focusing on reading. The learners will start listening to a video about starfish then speak about some features of starfish. Learners will apply some reading sub-skills like skimming and scanning. by the end the will draw mind maps and speak to summarize the text.

Main Aims

  • To provide A reading text about starfish so that learners will practice some reading skills like skimming and scanning.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Learners will draw their mind maps about starfish to practice speaking and writing in order to summarize the text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, I will engage the students to the topic by showing them the pictures about surfing, boating and skate-boring then asking them about their favorite one and why. Later I will show the picture of snorkelling to thing if it is entertaining or challenging. Moving to some sea creatures and starfish then presenting the learning outcomes.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this stage, I will provide the students with a video about the starfish and they will listen to write down some features of starfish. Afterwards, they will be in groups to discuss their features together. I will also pre teach vocabulary through some pictures and they will work in groups to match and discuss. After working in groups to match the words with the pictures, they will return to the main group and answer each question, describing the meaning of each word.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

In this stage, learners will tell about what is meant by skimming and scanning then they will read the definitions of both. They will start skimming the text about starfish in order to give a suitable heading for each paragraph. They will be in groups to find a suitable heading for each paragraph. They later will be back to the main room and I will elicit their headings and ask them why they wrote these headings so that they will talk about the text. Through three or four students talking about their reasons, all the class will be better able to know about the whole text as to add to what they already know while skimming.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Learners will work for the next activity to scan the text and write down the key words and phrases. They will draw a mind maps with the main topic (starfish), sub-topics (headings of paragraphs) and sub sub topics with (key words and phrases). So that they will use these mind maps for summarizing the text on their own way. Learners will work in groups first to write down the key words and phrases of each paragraph then draw their mind maps. They will return to the main group and I will ask some of them to share and show their mind maps and what they included in each area.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In this stage, I focus in the productive skills and learners will work in pairs and use the mind maps they made to practice speaking and summarize the text about starfish. Learners with use them also to write down three sentences about starfish then they will share their answers to the whole class. Firstly, they will work in pairs to speak about starfish and summarize the whole text. getting back to the main room two of them will talk about their summary to the whole class. Then they will write individually two to three sentences about starfish and share them to the whole class.
