Description

This lesson provides students with an opportunity to develop their listening skill and also gives them a chance to learn some grammatical points about count and uncount nouns.

Main Aims

  • In this skill lesson students are going to develop their listening skill.

Subsidiary Aims

  • In this language lesson students learn some grammatical points about countable and uncountable nouns.

Procedure

Lead in/Warmer (3 minutes) • This is to give students a chance to come up with Ideas about the topic and also to activate their schemata.

Write on board 'what's your favorite food?'. As an example start with yourself and tell them about your favorite food. Give them in pairs and give them time to discuss the question in pairs. While they are on task monitor them and make sure they are all involved. When they finish ask them to talk about their pairs' favorite food.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (3 minutes) • This is to provide students with new vocabulary in the listening task in order to have a better understanding of the listening audio.

Go through all the processes of ECDW to teach 'fussy eater' and 'eat in'. CCQ them to make sure they get the exact meaning of the words.

Pre-Listening (prediction) (3 minutes) • The aim of this stage is to motivate students and get them focused on what they are going to listen to.

Project the picture on p.63, ex.1, on the board. Ask them 'who are they?' and 'what are they talking about?'. Give them 1min to discuss in pairs and guess the answer for the questions. While they are discussing monitor them and check who has got the right idea. Then ask them to report back to the whole class.

Listening for Gist (5 minutes) • This is to give students a chance to be able to get general information from the listening task.

Put the question on board 'who is the fussy eater?' 'where do they go to eat?. Ask students to listen to the audio and find the correct answer for the questions. While they are listening stay back and don't monitor them. When the audio finishes ask them to share their ideas about the questions.

While Listening#1/ Listening for details (7 minutes) • The aim of this stage is to give students a chance to test their listening ability with a more challenging exercise.

Give them clear instructions. Students get their handouts with true false questions in it. They listen again and then they try to answer the questions. While are they listening stay back and ghost monitor them. When they have finished, put them in groups of 3/4 to check their answers. While they are checking their answers monitor them. At the end give them a quick feed back.

While Listening#2/ Listening for Specefic Information (8 minutes) • The aim of this stage is to give students a chance to listen for more/specific information.

Give them handouts and play the audio again. Students listen and fill in the blanks with 'some' and 'any'. When they listen are listening stay back and don't interrupt them. When the task is over put them in pairs/groups to check their answers. To make sure they all got the right answer ask them to go out and find their answers on the wall outside.

Grammar Clarification (6 minutes) • This is to provide students with an opportunity to clarify the meaning and form of the grammar.

Put students in pairs and give them handouts to complete the table by using 'any and 'some'. Give them clear instructions to avoid any confusion during the task. While they are on task monitor them and give them clues if needed. When they have finished put them in groups to check their answers. At the end give them quick feedback.

Controlled Practice (5 minutes) • The aim of this stage is to give students a chance to complete a more challenging exercise.

Put them in pairs and give the students handouts to fill in the blank by using 'some', 'any', 'is', 'are'. While they are on task monitor them. When they have finished change the pairs to check their answers. At the end ask two students with the right answers to read the conversation, and other students listen to check their answers.

Freer Practice (5 minutes) • The aim of this stage is to give them a chance to produce what they have learned.

Put them in pairs and ask them to discuss 'what do they have in their refrigerator?'. while they discuss monitor them closely and write down their errors for delayed feedback.
