Phobia's lesson : Present perfect
Pre-intermediate level


In this lesson students will learn how and to use present perfect through a guided discovery method. At the end of lesson they are provided a freer practice to master the lesson through talking about their life experiences.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of using present perfect

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a sharing life experiences in the context of shopping


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Quickly review vocabulary for clothes. Ask students to test each other on vocabulary bank on page 151

Exposure (5-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a reading text about fashion

Books open and focus on the questions and get Ss to answer the questions. Possible answer: Coco Chanel , designer for women clothes Giorgio Armani , Italian designer for men and women clothes Then focus on glossary and check the words before students start reading, Then give Ss time to read the interview and fill the blanks. Tell the students to read the reading again and look at the highlighted words and phrases and try to guess their meaning. Explain any other vocabulary

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Tell the students to look at the last four question in texts and. in pairs, ask the question 1-3 Check the answer with students.(open class)

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ask students to go Grammar bank 4B on page 132. Focus on example sentences and play the audio for Sts to listen and repeat Then go through the rules If it's necessary give more example

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T focus on exercises on page 133 Ask Sts to do the exercise individually and then check in pairs Check the answers with whole class. If it's needed I will give more exercise(hand outs)

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ask students to complete the questions with past participle of the verbs on Speaking part on page 31 (American English File) Students do this exercise individually . Check if students need help and have any problems by going to them Check the answers with whole class

Free Practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask students to work in pair and ask each other questions in Speaking part. If there is time , ask students to share their idea about the best place they have visited . (Tell me about the most exciting time you have had so far?)
