Speaking and Spoken Interaction
Upper-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will practise fluency and accuracy with functional language for apologising. The class starts with a video and a prediction about it and a discussion about situations in which we apologise. This is followed by language preparation in which students are introduced to the FL. Then there is come controlled practise. Finally, there is some free practice in the context of birthday parties.

Materials

Abc F2F SB, YouTube, Google Jamboard

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of apologising.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in using fillers.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Ss will watch a video (which will be paused) and share their predictions about it. - Once they watch the complete video they will discuss reasons for apologising.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

- Students will listen to a conversation about an audition in which the speakers use the FL that will be used during the CP and FP. - Ss complete ex. 2 in their books and compare their answers. - Extra activity: Ss listen again and write down any phrases they identify for apologising (Ss check together their answers and then the script to rectify)

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

- Ss solve ex. 3 a and b together. - T verifies MFP

Productive Task(s) (18-22 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Practice 1: Ss practise the FL out loud completing the phrases where they can add their own ideas e.g.: 'I didn't realise....', 'I'm really sorry. I'm afraid...' Practice 2: Ss write a small conversation about a situation of their choice in which one of the speakers apologises and the other accepts the apologies. They share with each other their conversations to spot mistakes, verify qs with the T and practise the dialogues together. FP: T sets the context of a birthday party and gives Ss some time to think about what they'd apologise for. Ss dialogue using the context set.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language
