Description

In this lesson, students learn about present perfect with for and since. The lesson will start with a discussion about what make a house a home and how ling they have been living there. It will be followed with a reading for gist with clarification of grammar. Then there will be controlled practice and group freer activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of present perfect with for and since in the context of what makes a home.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about a dialogue in the context of their current and previous homes.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will present a slide with a picture of a house and the questions: What makes a house a home? How long have you been living in your home for? T calls on individual Ss to answer.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

T asks Ss read a short text on a google form of someone describing where they use to live and where they currently live. There are 4 questions that follow, then another short text with 2 questions. The first question is done as a class, then the rest are done in the break out rooms in small groups. The questions elicit the difference between past simple and past perfect and for and since, through text analysis. Ss come back to the main room and check answers posted on a slide.

Useful Language (6-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T presents slides consisting of a timeline describing the difference between for and since, a couple sentences containing for and since, and the grammar rules for each. T goes over M(A)FP for the TL. T gives a few example sentences for each case and has Ss repeat the sentences.

Productive Task(s) (15-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss individually complete a google form consisting 10 gap fill questions in which they choose between for and since to complete each phrase. Ss go to breakout rooms to compare answers. Ss come to the main room to check answers provides on a slide. Ss go back to breakout rooms for freer practice. Ss work with partners to answer gap fill questions with the correct past simple or present perfect form of the verbs. they take turns to answer the completer forms of the questions.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T will recall students to main room and give DEC.
