Description

This lesson will cover the receptive skill: Reading and its Subskills: For Gist - (Global understanding, Predicting, Scanning, Inferring attitude, feeling, mood) and For Detail - (Skimming, Notetaking, Identifying, Proofreading, Editing, Deducing meaning). The context is Fashion p.62/63. The resource relied upon: Face2Face Elementary Book by Chris Redston and Gillie Cunningham

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice for gist (via scanning) and specific information (via deduction) in the context of fashion.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Throughout the lesson, the students will be able to better process and assimilate the selected text via a vocabulary-oriented presentation which includes a ‘word-synonym' matching exercise (pre-teach stage) as well as prior in the lead-in image-priming association stage.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Where do you buy these items? Follow-up: place the clothing items under the appropriate subheadings: Winter | Summer *Discuss clothing categories as a class. 1. SECOND IN PAIRS: To create a subheading for each paragraph within the article. Performance is assessed through the zoom chat where OCFB is taking place.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Production via speaking in pairs and then, as a a class: [This stage also serves as a cooler to an extent] Google Slide 25 will be displayed to guide students Instruction: Teacher asks students to perform a small role play between shop assistant and customer or two friends discussing fashion preference. Questions to cover: What is the customer buying and why? How much is the item? Any recommendations? Example: Customer: Good morning, I am looking for an elegant dress for a party. Assistant: Yes, I can help you find something. We have day dresses and evening dresses Customer: Can you tell me the prices? Assistant: Yes, between 15 and 45 dollars/pounds Customer: Do you have any jacket or shoes that I can wear with this dress? Assistant: Yes, sandals or a thin jacket with a similar colour to the dress. Customer: Thank you for the recommendation. Assistant: You are welcome. Note: Zoom chat will be used to provide pointers as well. In the general session, one pair will present their roleplay.
