Listening lesson
Grade 5 level

Description

In this lesson, students will listen to a music track to try to guess the topic. Students then will see one or more pictures to be able to guess. The teacher will play activity with the ball to listen to their ideas. The teacher will play the complete audio track for students to check their guesses. Students will summarize the dialogue that they have listened to in a paper and swap it to peer check.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information about an interview between a taxi driver and a reporter about an accident happened to him.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To set lesson context and prepare the students to the conversation that they will listen.
  • To activate schemata in order to help students predict the content of a listening passage
  • To allow students to listen for gist and specific information.
  • To liste for the gist and for specific information.
  • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and prepare the students to the conversation that they will listen.

The teacher plays the CD player for the students to listen to a short audio track of a background of a street -no talking just 'noise'- and a police car then the teacher asks students to guess the place and what happened.

Pre-listening (8-10 minutes) • To activate schemata in order to help students predict the content of a listening passage.

The teacher shows an eye-catching image or a picture of a tortoise on a taxi. The teacher asks students to think of what may be happened. The teacher throws a ball to a student to start listening to ideas from students, and that student throws the ball to another one, and so on.

While/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To allow students to listen for gist and specific information.

The teacher plays the recording for the students to listen to an interview between a taxi driver and a reporter about a tortoise that has fallen on the taxi. Students listen and follow the text in their books to check if their guesses were correct. The teacher asks the students some false/ true questions. Then they listen again to the interview and then discuss the questions in pairs. (Flase facts dictation)

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

The teacher plays the audio track for the students again but asks them to summarize what they have heard and write the paragraph in a paper. The teacher then asks the students to swap their papers with their students to peer check.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

The teacher asks the students to prepare 5 questions about what they read, once they have them ready. The teacher tells the students to make groups of 4 and then they can ask those questions to each other. The teacher monitor and gives feedback.
