Present Perfect Getting to know you

Description

In this lesson, students review the present perfect through a TTT framework. The lesson starts with a Kahoot quiz using the present perfect structure. This is followed by a speaking lead in where students ask their classmates a question to learn something new about each other. Next, they complete a short quiz on present perfect and from the results of the activity proceed to the teaching stage. Finally, there is a controlled practice through sentence formation and free practice in which students interview each other to discover 2 things in common using the target language.

  • To provide practice and clarification of present perfect in a getting to know you context.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation interview in the context of getting to know people.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Direct students to a Have you ever..? Kahoot poll. Ss log into the game and T prompts the game questions encouraging comments ss may have on each question. When done, T pairs up ss and instructs them to ask one more question to their partners in order to discover something new about each other.

Test #1 (10-12 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Direct ss to the gooogle forms test on present perfect. Check ICQ´s to make sure everyone understands how to answer the test. Instruct ss not to submit their answers when they are done. Once ss finish answering the test, pair them up to share their answers with a partner. After ss have shared their answers, they submit their work.

Teach (14-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

After ss complete Test #1, T reviews the answers with ss making sure to stop and clarify language for the questions that had the most mistakes. Use CCQ's to check comprehension before moving on.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

After the teach stage, T directs ss to the next test where they form sentences using the target language. Check comprehension using ICQ's and compare results to the first Test results.

Free practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

GIve instructions to the class. -" Now you will interview a partner to discover at least 2 things you have in common. Ask as many questions as possible using the present perfect structure. Once you find two things you have in common, move on and find a new partner. T checks comprehension of the activity using ICQ's and monitors the activity closely making sure to pay attention to their language and taking notes for further feedback. When the activity concludes, T gives feedback on accuracy.
