TP8
Upper-Intermediate level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of gerund and infinitives in the context of celebrities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of living as a celebrity using gerunds and infinitives

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will spend some time discussing the questions below: Who is your favourite celebrity? What do they do (act, sing, etc.)? What are your favourite works of theirs? https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1BWETAwwHJk-YcNUcQ5mRAbpmdkQIRSeR_Km7AdctJxE/edit?usp=sharing

Exposure (7-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will be provided a text and be instructed to read the text individually. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1BWETAwwHJk-YcNUcQ5mRAbpmdkQIRSeR_Km7AdctJxE/edit?usp=sharing After they have read it individually, they will be put into BORs and asked to underline all verbs in the text. After the BORs end, students will be asked what forms of verbs they saw. Then, they will be shown the text with all TL underlined and bolded to introduce the lesson of today. https://jamboard.google.com/d/1GXdPa-BOMZAQjlKL7FWo8zkdm6wPcbtk05KHMh3T-ZA/edit?usp=sharing After the first task is completed, we will go over the answers for students to check, and the TL will be highlighted. Students will be asked if they know what each grammar is called and if they know what it does.

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: The meaning activity will involve students sorting example sentences into columns. The columns are gerund, infinitive with to, and infinitive without to. Each column additionally has functions of each grammar to aid students in their guided discovery of meaning. https://jamboard.google.com/d/1uHaAti8zg2MvqdeS-fY7AhFsOorD4qPfCxfVPxjOdyc/edit?usp=sharing After this stage students will be asked MCQs to check their understanding. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1BWETAwwHJk-YcNUcQ5mRAbpmdkQIRSeR_Km7AdctJxE/edit?usp=sharing Form: This stage will adapt the analysis box from page 88 of the student book. Students will be provided a Jamboard where they must work in a group and separate words based on whether they take a gerund, infinitive, or bare infinitive. They will also be provided a dictionary to use that will help them with this. https://jamboard.google.com/d/1Cic5ERvk_kUPOOyKhxeZAOeiRt4ny9LC61lWlcMzNg8/edit?usp=sharing Pronunciation: This will focus on sentence stress. Students will be given a Google Form to work on independently that has audio with two options for sentence stress. They will select the sentence with the correct stress. The goal of this activity is to get them to notice the stress on the gerund and infinitive, and lack of stress on the "to" part of an infinitive. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScOZ7IPLx5mE0iQxWaRM-YMUcT9cvHFP5DsWPq3M7kKoy0wKQ/viewform

Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Controlled practice will be an adaptation of Practice 1a which is a FitB activity. Students will work in pairs to fill in the blanks on Google Forms. After they have filled in their answers, we will go over the areas that students struggled with the most during OCFB. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeVPkeu3m9k6C1xuujTUciFALp3AbxKaUdPi_VcV0xkgiGe_g/viewform

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

FP will have students work in groups to ask questions to the other about life as a celebrity. This task will start with about 2 minutes of planning some questions to ask their partners. This should allow students to think of a few questions and allow them to think about where they may be able to integrate the TL into their questions (and answers). After the planning period, students will be split into BORs where they will ask and answer questions about being a celebrity. This will be followed by OCFB where any mistakes or good language use will be noted. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1BWETAwwHJk-YcNUcQ5mRAbpmdkQIRSeR_Km7AdctJxE/edit?usp=sharing
