Description

In this lesson, sts focus on receptive skills of reading and sub-skill gist reading.It starts with a led-up activity. The context of the lesson is based on phrases about family,work,study and free time. In this lesson sts read and test their understanding. They will do different activities which involve filling in the four baskets with vocabulary about family,work,study and free time,doing exercises about the texts , talking about some famous British people and reading about Jamie Oliver.

  • To make students practice reading for skimming, scanning and reading for details in the context of biography about one of the most famous British chefs , Jamie Oliver

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expose students to phrases of family, work, study and free time activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I am going to draw three baskets on the WB and them ask sts to fill in them with words they know about work,family, free time and study. Then sts will do ex.1 in groups and I will check their answers as a whole class. I am going to ask them to read the phrases of this ex and underline the verb of each.I am going to ask them change them into the past form and then I will check as a WC . I will draw their attention to the difference between words and phrases . Then I will tell them to complete filling in the basket as a WC to make sure of their understanding the point. I will draw their attention to the way how they should pronounce some of these phrases.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I am going to ask sts if they know any famous British people and then I will show them some of these people on pictures on the wall. We will have a kind of discussion about them if they know. I will ask them if they know who is most famous , Ex4a. After that, I will reveal Jamie's picture on chest and ask them if they know him and if they do, I will draw a chart on the WB of two columns, one for things they know about him and one for the things they want to know about him.

While-Reading1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Sts now will read for gist (general information) to complete the chart if they could get any information about him and do Ex 4b..After sts peer check, I will check the answers as a whole class.Now his job has been known to sts. For this reason, I am going to ask them to say the words, chef and chefs to make sure of their pronunciation.

While-Reading 2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

At this stage, sts read silently longer to be able to do Ex.5a ..They have to read for specific information and details to do the task.After peer check, I am going to check their answers as a WC.

Post-Reading (2-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

l am going to do the FB by talking about Jamie as WC conversation.Then I will ask them to say two sentences about themselves using the phrases the have learned.
