Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about inviting someone on a date in the context of going out

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice in speaking for fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To engage students

T will first write down on the WB "Famous People", show the first three pages of the PPT which was prepared especially for this lesson, then check with them if everything's alright. Of course it's not since the first picture used is one showing me, and I'm not that famous! Therefore the word "Invite" will appear on the screen, leading the way for the next task. WC FB

Pre-listening task/Semi-controlled practice (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the context and the listening to come

T will go through the PPT showed in stage 1, I will show them several famous people in order to review the basic vocabulary of going out, and how to invite someone for a date. Then T will split the Ss in half, one side will write the names of 3 people they would like to meet and why. The other side will ask them questions about these people : e.g. : Would you like to go on a date with him/her? Would you like to go shopping with him/her? ... Then students stand up and ask others about people they like.

Gist Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide students the idea of getting the general information when listening

T will prepare Ss for the listening, by establishing the 4 characters and writing on the WB "Who?" and "What?". T will draw a line to do two distinct colons for each of the audio tracks, then after one listening to the two tracks, the students will have to say who is speaking to who and what are they discussing. Check in pairs WC FB

Detailed Listening (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening

T will give instructions about this new exercise, the Ss will have to find out specific informations about the characters from the audio tracks and fill the gaps. T will hand these exercise sheets over to the Ss, then T will make them listen one more time to the two tracks. Check in pairs then another listen. Check in pairs again then WC FB

Post-Listening (7-10 minutes) • To provide students an expansion on what they've learned and use

T will write down a series of questions the Ss can ask between them, then T will make them work in pairs and try to get a date with his/her partner. T will arrange the classroom in order to get in each pairs one male one female. If not I will put them in little groups and find out what's best. If time left, I will make pairs (or groups) stand up, and try to do a roleplay like : "You are in the street, you don't know this man or woman, now try to get a date!"
