Copy of Horoscopes
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn new vocabulary to describe the personality types. Lesson starts with a quick review of star signs where students ask their friends about their star signs and tell theirs. Then students check their understandings on some adjectives related to the personalities in a definition matching task. Students get engaged in the stages of teaching vocabulary to clarify and check their understandings on meaning and be clear on pronounciation. Then students scan the text to find the answers to the questions which are closely linked to those vocabulary. This is followed by students' scanning the text to find noun forms of those vocabulary. Finally, a freer speaking activity takes place where students discuss their horoscopes in the text with a partner

Materials

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of horoscopes
  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about personality types in the context of horoscopes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher writes "Sagittarius" on board and asks students what it is and why she wrote it on board. Teacher says "This is my star sign. Is there any other Sagittarius in the class?" Teacher detects other Sagittarius people in the class if there is and gets students to stand up and move around and find other people whose star signs are same with them. She says "Stand up, move around and ask people's star sign and stand with people whose star sign are same with yours." She checks students understanding with ICQs:" Will you stand up? Will you go around ask everyone about their favorite film? What will you ask? Will stand together or come back and sit down after finding my people?" After mingling students around the classroom and finding their partners, teacher gets those students to sit together. She gets them to have a brief discussion about their star sign and what they know about their star sign. She demonstrates an example for this question by saying " For example, I know Sagittarius people like travelling and laughing and also they are honest people. What do you think about your star sign people?" Then teacher gets feedback and says " In this lesson, we will learn some adjectives about personality types and horoscopes."

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

To check students' understanding about adjectives, teacher gives a "definition matching task" to each student and gets them to work on this activity individually to test their knowledge. Before handing out the paper sheet, she makes an example on it. Then she gets students to compare their answers with a partner. Teacher does whole class feed back.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Teacher shows all definitions of the adjectives on board by using OHP and using all stage of teaching vocabulary on each word, she clarifies and get sts to be clear on both meaning and form. Firstly she elicits the word and make sure about students' understanding on meaning with CCQs and then she models and drills the adjectives and concentrate on pronunciation by highlighting the stress. Then she gives time to students to copy and get a written record of vocabulary (See appendix 1)

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Teacher introduces the text and gets students to scan the text to find answers of the questions related to the personality types in the text. She says ",I'll give you some questions to answer and you will find the answers of those questions in the text. Scan the text and find the answers." She check their understanding with ICQs: "Do you have to know every word in the text to answer questions? will just scan or read it in detail?" Teacher gets sts to compare their answers with their partners. Teacher does whole class feedback. Then teacher gets students to find and underline the noun forms of the adjectives by scanning the text again and before get students to start, she shows an example on it and check the understanding with ICQs: " Will read the text in detail or just to find the nouns? What will you when you find them?" Teacher does whole class feedback and when necessary, she makes drilling to correct pronunciation and highlight the stress while giving feedback on those words.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher gets students to read their horoscopes in the text and then share their opinions about it with their groups. Teacher says " First, read your horoscope in the text and then discuss with your group if it's true for you or not. If it's not true for you, try to write a new about yourself by using the vocabulary you have learnt today." She makes an example of it. Teacher monitors the groups and help them when necessary. She gets feedback and summarizes the main aim of the lesson at the end of the lesson.
