Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide speaking and writing practice of functions (Articles & Quantifiers)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide the opportunity for speaking practice (discussing usage of articles and quantifiers)
  • To provide students with freer practice of incorporating TL and Functional Phrases into English text

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. introduces lesson / topic by introducing the lead-in, Tell me about your neighbours": Statement: I have many neighbours in my apartment building. The couple upstairs has lots of children. Questions: Do you have a few neighbours or a lot of neighbours? How many children do they have? In partners, Ss asks each other a question and make a statement: (BOR) Q/A link sent to CHAT Asks a Question: Do you have a few neighbours or a lot of neighbours? How many children do they have? Makes a Statement: I have ______ neighbours. They have _____________ children. OCFB T. asks 2-3 Ss to share their responses.

Text-Work (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text.

Reading Activity: (BOR) - Send Link to CHAT Text: My upstairs neighbour has many parties during the weekends. He usually invites several people and they always makes a lot of noise. He has invited me a few times. I hate to be rude and say no so I go to the party for a little while. At his Christmas party last year some of our other neighbours were there. So I stayed a lot longer that time. CCQ? Does your neighbour have some parties or a lot of parties? Do these parties make a little noise? How many people go to these parties? Some or many? Language Clarification: MFPA (11-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target langage

Review MFPA in two parts: Articles: a, an, the 1. Use the article 'the' with a noun or the subject (adjective + noun) of a sentence. 2. Differentiate between saying 'a' dog vs. 'the' dog. 3. Go over examples together.... Review when to use and when not to use: 1. Use the article ‘an’ before a word that begins with a vowel is the vowel sound is .... (examples for all vowels) and with the letter 'h' where the 'h' is silent and the first sound heard is a vowel. 2. Special Note: Do not use 'an' before words that begin with the letter 'e' where the ‘e’ makes the /juː/ sound, i.e. euphemism 3. Go over list of nouns together; have Ss identify which article should be used, 'a' or 'an' Quantifiers: a few, a little, some; a lot, many, several Activity 1: (Handout) "A Lot of Cats & A Little Mice" Sent Handout link to Chat Instructions 1. Read the sentences. 2. Identify and circle words in each sentence that are quantifiers. 3.
