Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a rental advertisement in the context of real state buisness and people's needs

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about places to let in the context of real state advertisement and people's needs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher tells the students about a friend's problem who she wants to rent an apartment. Teacher asks students to discuss in pairs how they could help. Teacher provides the students with specific points to think about. Teacher asks the students about their feedback.

Pre-teach vocabulary (3 minutes) • to provide the students with the vocabulary needed for the exposure task, so that they don't struggle with answering questions.

-Teacher elicit, ask CCQs when needed, drills, and write vocabulary needed for the reading and the writing tasks like; advertisement, rent, flat, bus station, bus stop, smoker, non smoker, pet, and park.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading different samples of rental advertisements

-Teacher gives the students HO1, which has 4 different advertisement, and 3 different renters. -Teacher asks the students to read about the renters, then choose the best flat for them. -Teacher models to the student how to find the answer ( scanning sub-skill), by looking to the rental cost first to know where they will find the information, spot some words like; smoker/non smoker , pets/no pets, station, etc..) -Teacher asks the students to check their answers in pairs. -Teacher displays the answer key on the projector, and gives detailed feedback.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive writing task.

-Teacher displays a model of a rental advertisement. -Teacher goes through the items of the advertisement ,and gives a title to each item to have a clear view of the form, and the organization of the flat or a house advertisement. -Teacher keeps a good white board record of the main items of any rental advertisement, and keeps a model for an advertisement on the projector to guide students while writing.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

-Teacher asks the students to imagine they are writing an advertisement of their flats to let. -Teacher asks the students to describe their flats thinking of the items that were written on the board, and write their own advertisement. -Teacher monitors and collects errors, to give the students her feedback at the end of the task.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

-Teacher hangs out the students works all over the room, and asks them to take a tour around the room to decide which apartment would they like to rent. -Teacher listen to students' decisions and gives feedback, praising good sentences, and asks them in groups to spot their errors after writing them on the board.

Flexi stage • To get the students to speak to each other about their favourite advertisements, to develop fluency in an authentic context .

-Teacher puts the students in pairs, A and B. -A asks B about their favorite flat to rent, using the questionnaire points on the board, B replies to the questions, practising on( there're )and( there's) as a review and using adjectives. -Also students practice on asking questions like (How much is the rent? H How much space is there? How many bedrooms are there? -Teacher gives Ss feedback based on monitoring.
