Description

In this lesson, students will review and practice lexis related to describing family members. The lesson starts by eliciting the nickname and real name of someone who has a famous nickname.Later on, students listen to the record only to identify the name the speaker doesn't like. Then, they listen to the record again to match the people with the names that they call the speaker Susan. Teacher checks the answers after the exercise. It continues with the yes-no questions to find out how the names written on the board are related.Students tell the different names that people call them.They work with a partner and write their family members name under each heading and talk about the typical, unusual, best names in their country .

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher starts the lesson by eliciting the nickname of Jennifer Lopez J,L. She clarifies "nickname"

Test #1 (13-15 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Students look at the lady on the page 4 of the course book Inside Out. Teacher tells her name. They listen to the record to find out the name she doesn't like. Then they listen to the record again to match the people with the names that they call her Susan in the second exercise. Teacher checks the answers after the activity. They tell different names that people call them.

Teach (10-12 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Teacher writes some family member names and draws a family tree on the board and encourages them to ask yes-no questions to guess how they are related. e.g. Is Fatih your brother? Is Erme your husband? If the answer is yes, the student comes and writes the name in the correct place on the board.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

In pairs, students write their own family members names under each heading in the lexis activity on the page. They discuss which they like best or are typical or unusual.

Free practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher does the final pronunciation activity.
