In this lesson, learners will focus on receptive skills of reading. The context of the lesson is based on a character who managed to overcome her disability and became America's master chef.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about "Against the Odds" in the context of overcoming a disability.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of overcoming a disability.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1- Start by opening a discussion between the students about... What kinds of competitions are there on TV shows? Do you ever watch them? let the students explain their points of views and examples of TV shows that they prefer. 2- Show a short video about the win.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1- Ask for hints and ideas about the title, "Against the Odds". 2- Teach vocabulary words ( Tentative - amateur - contestant - culinary - autoimmune) using MPF method. 3- Ask the students to skim the the quotes said by Christine Ha in order to answer these questions a) what did Ha win during season 3 "MasterChef" ? b) Why did she loose her eyesight ?

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

-Ask the students to read the text carefully in order to try to understand how the character managed to overcome her disability. - Ask the students to work in teams to answer the following questions : a) Why do you think Ha "captured America's heart"? b) After losing her vision, what did Ha try to do in the kitchen? c) What do you think Ha means by "people have it in themselves"? Do you agree with her view?

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Inferences: working individually / on your own - you have two minutes to find the answers. Get back to the text and try to find the word or words that give the same meanings as the following words.. 1- the chance to publish her own cookbook 2- winning against 3- did not consider seriously 4- determination ICQs: 1- Will you work alone or in groups ? 2- How much time do you need to find the words? 3- will you look up the words in a dictionary or find them in the text?

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Individual work - post few sentences on PADLET Think about a time in your life when you faced a challenge. How did you feel? Did someone help you? How did you feel afterward? Then write a story about your challenge ICQs: 1- Where will you post your story? 2- Will you work in pairs or alone?
