To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about the 2014 world cup in the context of sports

To provide clarification of words about teams and competitions in the context of sports

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

ask if students watched the world cup this year, talk about what they thought of it

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible, by removing stumbling-block vocabulary.

Words to pre-teach: squad, midfielder, arbitration.

Gist Reading (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less-challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Skim the text, pick from a list of possible titles

Detailed Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading

read it, answer specific questions

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide fluency and practice speaking, with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
