Copy of Celta Lesson Plan 5
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about modals (can/can't, must/mustn't, should/shouldn't, have to/don't have to, need to/don't need to) through guided discovery based on a reading text about a company. After the structures were introduced, there is some controlled practice through gap filling exercises and free practice through a short discussion&writing task.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of modal verbs of obligation in the context of a good workplace.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To consider & discuss what makes a good workplace.
  • To discuss and write about the rules of a workplace or a school by using the modals of obligation.
  • To read about a successful company.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be shown a picture and will be asked what they think today's subject will be about. After eliciting answers, students will be asked to work in pairs and talk about what makes a company, organization or school a good place to work or study. They will also be asked to make a list. When they finish, students will share their lists with the rest of the class.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

Ss wil be asked to quickly read the article about a company called Happy Computers and find three things that makes it a great place to work. In pairs, they will also say if they have them in their list.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss will be asked to have a look at the table in exercise 3. In pairs, they will try to find the sentences in the text and fill in the blanks in the third column. (They will complete the first column later.)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss will be shown some pictures and T will give some information about them. (This is Elizabeth. She's a very bad teacher and this is the school principle...) T will make sentences about Elizabeth and will ask the students to make sentences as if they are the school principle. Ss will also be shown the modals that they need to use. T writes the answers on the board. Finally, students will be asked to repeat each sentence as a class.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In groups, Ss will fill in the blanks of the first column in the table and have a second look at the sentences in exercise 3. T will monitor the groups and give feedback when necessary. Ss will fill in the gaps in exercise 4. They will check answers in pairs. Then, the answers will be checked as a class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will be asked to think about their own workplace, school etc and talk about the rules using the modals on the board. Ss will be asked to write about the rules of their workplace, school etc. They will be reminded to use 'can, have to, must, need to and should' at least once. They will write 7-10 sentences. If there's time, students who volunteer will read their paragraphs to the class.
