Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have developed their ability to listen for gist and specific information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have developed their oral fluency with specific reference to discussing birthdays' parties.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1- Show the picture from the book P40. * Ask them some questions 1- Where are the people? 2- What are they doing? 3- How do you know it's a birthday party? 4- What is the relationship?

Pre-teach vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1- Try to elicit, model, drill and show the form of (fantastic, bit, boring and amazing).

While Listening 1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Task (A) 1- Tell the students to listen alone, and find out * Who is talking? * How old is he? Task (B) 1- Listen again. put a (√) if it's in the text and a (X) if it isn't. 2- Demo with a student the first one * Where the family lives (√). 3- Check with your partner. 4- Answer key.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the simple past

1- Ex "3a" demo with a student (from ex "2b" in pairs -- underline was, wasn't, were, weren't). 2- Show Ex "3b" on the projector. Model, drill (was, wasn't, were, weren't). 3- Ex "3c" demo with a student. * Alone choose the correct answer. * Check with your partner. *Answer key.

Controlled practice (Listening) (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference.

1- Show a picture of SB P41. Ask: a) What do you think of this picture? b) is it in the past? 2- Listen just and answer: a) Where was he? b) Why was his birthday a special day? 3- Demo Ex "5b" with a student. * Model, drill some questions. a) Alone answer the questions. b) Check with your partner. c) Answer key.

Semi-controlled practice (speaking) (7-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to respond to the listening and expand on what they've learned

1- Now think about your best friend (Khalid). 2- Demo with a student. (tell him/her to ask you the questions and you ask him/her) In 2005, in my house,... etc. 3- Practice in pairs. 4- Move and tell others.
