In this lesson, students will learn past perfect continuous and be reminded of narrative tenses through an adapted newspaper story about an incident happened during a flight over the Atlantic. The lesson will start watching the video news about the article from nbcnews.com.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice, clarification and review of narrative tenses, past perfect continuous in the context of newspaper article about an incident happened during a flight.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students for fluent and accurate pronunciation of past forms and sentence rhythm.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start lesson by watching http://www.nbcnews.com/video/nightly-news/46032091 to introduce SS to the topic for 54 seconds. Hand-out the lead-in task : Tell SS look at the broadcast text while they will watch/listen the same news again. Tell them while they are hearing and reading they need to underline all the past tenses in the text and type the tense name in the space given with this task. 2 minutes. Tell SS peer check for 1 minute. The aim of the task is to check SS understanding of simple past, past continuous, and present perfect tenses before moving on to narrative tenses with this controlled practice activity. Monitor and feedback: Elicit the answers.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text (reading 6a)

Check the meaning of INCIDENT with Ss. Tell Ss they will be reading a true story from a British newspaper. Hand out the article. Tell them to read it to find out about what happened during the flight, what was the incident?[exe a] Tell them not to worry about 1-9 verb tenses in the article. Tell Ss to read the article for 2 min. Elicit the answer.

Highlighting (2-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language and find out Ss' knowledge about it

Tell Ss to read the article again to find the correct verb tenses and circle the right form of the verbs 1-9 [exe b]. (2 min) Tell them to work with their partners to check their answers.(1 min) Feedback: Elicit the answers type on the board with the tense names. Note: On this exercise b, Ss only reviews simple past, past continuous, past perfect tenses)

Clarification (8-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Part 1) Tell Ss to look at exe c) ask them what they think is different in between 2 sentences for meaning and form. Tell them to work with their partner for the answer. Peer work. 3 min. Meanwhile, type two sentences on the board. Elicit their replies and clarify. Part 2) Give students guided discovery worksheet for the four narrative tenses. Have them to work on that task. Do the first one (Past simple tense) together to clarify instructions and their understanding with whole class work on the board. Let them work on the remaining 3 narrative tenses with this guided discovery sheet. (Peer work) Monitor students on task. Elicit answers. Board work. Pronunciation work for irregular past tenses on the task. Meaning-Form-Pronunciation will be clarified for the narrative tenses. Part 3) Pronunciation/sentence rhythm Give students sentence rhythm activity worksheet. Listening audio 2 11) Tell them they are going to practise sentence rhythm now: "listen to the extract and notice that the larger words are stressed and the others aren't". Remind Ss stressed words are the longer content ones (verbs, nouns, adj, adv..) - the ones that convey the message. Tell them to link the words in the text while they are listening. Let them repeat the rhythm.

Controlled Practice (4-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give them student handout reference activity. Tell them they have 2 minutes to complete it. Immediately after hand out the grammar activity and tell Ss to circle the correct form and put the correct verb form in the blanks exercises. First individual work. Then peer check: Make 3-4 Ss a group and tell them to check their answers. Monitor. Feedback: Elicit the answers.Teacher praises students for the good language and elicits corrections and reformulations for the rest.

Semi-Controlled and Free Practice (4-9 minutes) • To further consolidate the TL and allow for some production

Hand Out the activity, make groups of 3-4 in circles. Tell them to complete the given 2 sentences by using 4 narrative tenses, be creative but note the tense forms. Monitor. Feedback: If any time left have SS to share their sentences with the whole class. Praise the good language put on the board. Correct and reformulate the language with problems.
