Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide speaking and writing practice of functions related to offering opinions and giving examples.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in expressing oneself with peers and in OCFB.
  • To provide reading practice using a text that uses functions (dependent clauses/functions) related to providing one's opinions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce Topic with Question: What is the best part of summer? In my opinion, the best part of summer is the weather. This is what I think. This is my opinion. What do you think is the best part of summer? What is your opinion? Instructions: Ask Ss to complete Q/A in partners (BOR) In your opinion, what is the best part of summer? In my pinion, the best part of summer is ______________________. Send Link to Q/A and Dependent Fragments to CHAT OCFB: T. asks 2-3 Ss to share their responses (from partner discussions).

Text-Work (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text.

T. Introduces the lesson: "Clarifying the Use of Functions: to Express Opinions and Provide Examples" -Explain, functional language is used to set up your language and conversations. For instance, today's functions will inform your listener that you will tell them your opinion, your ideas, what you think. T. informs Ss they will have a Reading activity that uses these functions.
