Main Aims

  • To provide exposure to functional language for 'giving and responding to advice.'

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in the context of giving advice.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus student's attention on the tips displayed on the screen. Ask: Do you think these are good or bad ideas? Why or why not? Have them work in pairs to discuss them (3 min) OCFB (Jamboard)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Explain to learners the task and ask them to look at the gist task carefully before playing the audio track once. Task: Students have to select whether the things being talked about in the audio clip are challenges or solutions. They will be able to work together (in BOR) to answer the google forms. (4 min) OCFB showing their responses and providing the correct ones (2 min) Answers: Problems Making mistakes Listening to English Pronunciation Solution Time to prepare Take notes Practice in groups Listen to media in English Subtitles Then give students some time to read the key phrases on the google forms. Explain that students will need to select all of the options that apply. (ICQ) Then play the audio a second time. Allow some time after playing the audio for them to finish their responses. (3 min) Move on to OCFB, go over their responses. CCQ: What do you think today's topic is going to be about? Answer: Giving and receiving advice, particularly in the context of sitting exams.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Draw students attention to the key phrases. Have them each read one out loud.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning (3 min) Have the students move the phrases around and classify them as expressions to agree, expressions to disagree, or to suggest. Form (3 min) Which of these are fixed clauses? Which are independent clauses? Pronunciation (3 min) Have students work in pairs (BOR) to answer the questions regarding pronunciation. OCFB allow for questions to be posed. (1 min)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In pairs (BOR) students will come up with a list of their top five tips for taking tests. (Jamboard) (5 min) OCFB (Jamboard) have everyone discuss their five tips and show them to the class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In pairs complete exercise 9A from the SB p. 45. (Google forms) (6 min) OCFB go over answers, ask them to read some out. (2 min) DEC on Jamboard. Ask if there are any questions (2 min)
