Description

in this lesson vocabulary is going to be presented in context. the lesson starts with discussion on the students opinion on different cities. the main question after this part is going to be "what makes a city livable?"

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about livable cities in the context of City life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Debate in the context of Citylife VS Village life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

There will be pictures of some cities in the first page of the Power point. There will be a question of can you tell me "Where are these places"

Pre-Reading/Listening (12-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

we will have a the vocab presentation for the words "urban planner", "surroundings", "restrict", "traffic congestion", "waterfront", "opportunities", "traffic congestion". in the MPF order. Students will be grouped for the game. Vocabulary handout will be handed to the students. they will stick the sentences to the words on slide 2 of the power point. Instruction will be provided following ICQs will be asked I.E: So, are you going to speak about the cities?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

students will be asked to guess the reading gist. possible answers can be: The ways to have livable cities More people are living in the city nowadays. Economic opportunities are better in the cities. Teacher writes some of them on the board. 1 minute will be given to the students to skim the reading and find out which one of the guess were closest. students will get a chance to discuss that in groups for 2 minutes some of the Ss will reason their groups choice.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

students will be derected to answer the following questions (slide2) in 3 minutes what do urban planners understand about how we feel? what is a congestion fee? how big is Atlantic station in Atlanta? According to the passage, why do people move to cities? there will be a pair work. the answers will appear on the screen.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

slide 3 will be shown the students will speak about the questions in groups. teacher will go around and monitor the students taking notes of their mistakes. at the end mistakes will be written on the board and pair correction will be implied.
