To review and practice the past continuous tense in the context of relationships and first meetings
To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a debate
Procedure (38-45 minutes)
Introducing the lesson/ Setting the context of relationships with pictures of couples. Students discuss how couples meet. I will put pictures on the board and have them talk about the place where they are and whether they know each other. I will pre-teach "queue" and "go out with". I will also ask them how they met their partners or if they don't have any how their parents did.
I will read something out and the students should be able to say whether they guessed correctly or not.
The past continuous is taught through a grouping activity. It is explained through a timeline and then the concept is checked with multiple sentences and questions in hand-out 1. The students are then exposed to the form and asked to do a fill-in activity in HO 2.
the sentences on the board are modelled and the students are asked to repeat after the teacher. Feedback is provided if sts are still in doubt as to how to pronounce them,
The sts are expected to work individually and then in pairs to answer the questions in two exercises in HO 3. Early finishers are told to check the answers with their neighbors.
