Description

* learning outcomes: At the end of the lesson students will *Be able to take notes/ write a brief summary. *learn new vocabulary * Get introduced to present and past simple tenses. * Acquire and develop necessary listening skills in order to follow and comprehend information stated in the video. * Develop some receptive subskills (listening for gist, listening for details). * Guess the unknown words * Retain relevant information.

Materials

Abc Projector- video player, worksheets, pictures

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information practice and develop students' listening skills by introducing a listening audio for students.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To integrate students'receptive skills and encourage their listening discrimination.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

* The teacher activate students’ schema by showing them a penguin’s picture (pic1) to activate students’ schemata. “Do you know this animal’s name?” “Where do you think it lives?’’ “ Have you seen one before?” “How do you think it is different than other birds?” “From the title “lala penguin goes shopping to in japan” What do you expect to watch and what information you expect to listen to in the video?”

Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

*pre-listening • The teacher then gives students the purpose of the listening task: • “You will watch a video and then will answer some questions concerning the video, take notes to help you gather general information about the topic” • • Activity 1: • * The teacher pre - teaches some vocabulary before playing the tape: • >Neighbor : person living next door. • *Antarctica: north icy pole. • * Yard: house garden. • Hose: long tube for watering.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Whilst listening: *listening for gist • The teacher plays the video for the first time • Then the teacher discusses the video with the students asking gist questions : “Why do you think Lala penguin is special than other penguins?” “Is it smart as people?” “what does it eat?” “why do all people love Lala?” “What does it do everyday?” “Do you think it is harmful?” *Activity 2 *Aim: listening for specific information ( to complete the text): Mode of interaction : T-S * The teacher plays the video again, hands out transcript of the audio with empty gaps; asking the students to fill in the gaps while listening.

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

*listening for details: Activity 3 Mode of interaction : T-S where the teacher gives instructions/ Then S where they answer the quiz alone / S-T while revising the answers. * The teacher shows the students a multiple choice quiz, then plays the video one more time and asks students to answer the quiz. (activity3) *The teacher then divides students into pairs to check their answer. To get a feedback

Post-listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

*post listening: Activity 4: Aim: to give free written practice to integrate between writing and information heard *mode of interaction: SS/ T-SS • The teacher divides students into pairs and asks them to write 3 facts about penguins learnt from the audio.and asks them to compare their work. •
