Description

In this lesson students will learn to ask and give directions. Students will answer questions in the context of giving and asking for directions followed by covering MFPA of the same and a free practice where they will guide their peers to specific places in a map.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show students a picture of the palace of fine arts in the center of Mexico City, I will then ask students How can they get there? From where direction? What are the places near by? In which directions?

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will send students a google form where they will answer a multiple choice task: Label the pictures with the correct direction. Answers: a) go left b) go past the turning c) go along the main road d) take the first right e) keep going until you reach the (border) f) at the corner g) go though the (center of town) h) cross the bridge i) go straight on j) in front of you I will put students into break out rooms to discuss their answers before whole class feedback.

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Meaning: In a jam board I will ask students to classify which expressions are of movement and which are of a specific location. Directions of movement: go left, go past the turning, go along the main road, go through the (center), go straight on. Directions of specific location: take the first right, at the corner, cross the bridge, in front of you, keep going until you reach the (border) Form: I will ask students: What does the expressions of movement have in common? The word "go" means to move and all the expressions of movement start with go What does the expressions of specific location have in common? All the expressions of a specific location are pointing to something specific for example: cross the bridge, the bridge is the specific somewhere. Pronunciation: go straight on. The main stress in this sentence is "go" There is a linking between straight and on /streɪt'ɑn/ keep going until you reach the (border). The main stress in this sentence is "keep" Appropriacy: It is considered neutral language.

Productive Task(s) (15-16 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will ask students to listen to three conversations and answer a google form, are the sentences asking for information, explaining directions or showing understanding. Conversation 1 1. Excuse me, we're trying to get to the carnival is this the right bus?(A) Yes, but you don't need the bus it's very close. 2.Oh! Can we walk? (A) 3. Yes, it takes about ten minutes from here. (E) Conversation 2 1. Excuse me, can you help me? I'm looking for the Plaza Hotel is it right this way? (A) 2. Um... Plaza Hotel, Plaza Hotel, yes keep going past the cinema, and take the first left. (E) 3. ok. (U) 4. Then keep going for about fifteen minutes until you reach the end of the road. And you'll see the sign for the hotel. You can't miss it. (E) 5. Ok, can you show me on the map? (U) Yes, sure Conversation 3 1. Excuse me, we want to get to the Gran Motel is it far? (A) 2. The Grand Motel? Yeah, it's just over there. Just go to the end of this street. Go left and go past the... um... there's a restaurant. Go past the restaurant and it's on the left. (E) 3. (U) Free Practice I will put students in pairs in break out rooms and give them a map in google docs, I will ask them to choose one of the maps and ask for and give directions using the information they have on the map.

I will be attentive and prepare the jam board so that when the time comes I will have feedback ready to give the students.
