TP3: Reading: Bond Girls

Description

In this lesson, students practice reading for gist, then for specific information. This is followed by controlled speaking practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and gist reading practice using a text about describing people in the context of movie characters.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in the form of questions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Display a picture of famous Egyptian spies from Egyptian series. Ask students who they are. Display a picture/ pictures of James Bond and ask students who James Bond is. Display their pictures with girls and ask: Who was always with the spies in the movies/ series.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Use pictures of Bond girls to elicit words e.g. 'fair hair', 'dark hair'. Concept check words through displaying pictures and asking students to say the adjectives.

While-Reading #1 (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/ listening tasks

Give the paper folded to trainees, diplay different titles, and ask them to read quickly and choose one of the titles.

While-Reading #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Instruct the students to read the text to search for specific information and tick the boxes. They should work alone. Then, they can check their answers in pairs. Display the answer.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Instruct students to interview each other using the questions in the activity. They should take turns interviewing each other and write the answers. Give feedback.
