Main Aims

  • Students will be able to describe the role of family members in English.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will play a song about family and show a picture of the family tree with the new vocabulary.

Presentation (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher will draw the family tree on the board and prepare a set of flash cards with family members on it and ask the students to take a card -each-. The teacher will start asking questions like: is this a family tree? Are Tom and Michael brothers? Is Sue the daughter of Laura?

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher will give the students a matching exercise where students will match the name to its role in the family and ask them to correct each others' exercises. Questions: George Son of George Hannah Grandfather of Bill Sue Husband of Laura Henry Daughter of Laura Laura Granddaughter of Mary Tom Daughter of George

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The teacher will ask concept checking questions as follows: Is your uncle the brother of your father? Is your niece the daughter of your sister? Is your cousin the son of your uncle? Is your father the son of your grandfather? Is your aunt the sister of your grandmother?

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher the divide the students into pairs and ask them to tell each other about their family and the extended family members. The teacher will observe and listen to the students' conversations and give a feedback and a quick correction of the main mistakes noticed.
