Persuasion Modes

Description

In this lesson students learn about and identify persuasion modes through learning stations with different tasks. The lessons starts by presenting the persuasion modes via a google slides. This is followed by the station work in teams where students identify the persuasion modes in different tasks. Finally students reflect on their progress.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T introduces topic "Persuasion Modes" and asks ss to share the most persuasive things they say to their parents to get something they want.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

T introduces the term appeals and presents the 3 modes of persuasion to class. Ss take individual notes during the presentation.

Station Work (30-35 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss are divided into teams of 4 and work collaboratively in stations. Station 1 requires ss to look at 3 ads and decide which mode of persuasion is dominant and provide evidence. Station 2 requires ss to create 3 simple posters promoting their highschool applying the 3 modes of persuasion. Station 3 is a web scavenger hunt for a variety of ads that predominantly use one of the modes. Ss create a google slides presentation and complete a hand out providing rationale for their choices.

Report (3-5 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Ss volunteer to share some of their work. T elicits main points from the lesson. Ss reflect on their comprehension of the topic through the street light method.
