Upper Intermediate level
To identify persuasion modes in different media.
To provide receptive and productive skills practice.
Procedure (40-50 minutes)
T introduces topic "Persuasion Modes" and asks ss to share the most persuasive things they say to their parents to get something they want.
T introduces the term appeals and presents the 3 modes of persuasion to class. Ss take individual notes during the presentation.
Ss are divided into teams of 4 and work collaboratively in stations. Station 1 requires ss to look at 3 ads and decide which mode of persuasion is dominant and provide evidence. Station 2 requires ss to create 3 simple posters promoting their highschool applying the 3 modes of persuasion. Station 3 is a web scavenger hunt for a variety of ads that predominantly use one of the modes. Ss create a google slides presentation and complete a hand out providing rationale for their choices.
Ss volunteer to share some of their work. T elicits main points from the lesson. Ss reflect on their comprehension of the topic through the street light method.
