Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Superlatives in the context of a listening task about record breakers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about world records in the context of a listening task about record breakers

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In the lead in I'm going to show students three pictures of famous athletes and ask them why are they known for. Then ask students if they think that the athletes in the pictures are the best athletes in the world.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will do a listening by gist task where they will hear the audio and match the stories with the pictures in two minutes.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

A listening by detail stage where they will hear the audio again and fill the gaps with a set of words previously provided. Students will have 2 minutes to do the exercise by themselves and 2 to peer check before the OCF

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Clarify the MFP intensively of four words of the targeted language: biggest, longest, best and most expensive. Then provide a cline with the adjective in its regular form, the comparative and the superlative, and the rules to produce them.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

A transformation key word exercise in the context of a quiz about 'the world mosts'. Students will have 6 minutes to do it individually and then 2 to peer check before the OCF

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will discuss the answers of the quiz completed in the controlled practice into breakout rooms for five minutes. Then they will come back into the main room for OCF and delayed feedback.
