In this grammar lesson students will receive exposure to and practice the difference between the simple present perfect and present continuous tenses.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students should be quickly greeted as the teacher briefly and politely introduces themselves.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students are provided with a dialog between two women on the subject of "boyfriend troubles". The dialog makes heavy use of the simple past and past continuous but is out of order. Students are assigned BOR where they can work together to place the dialog in order of utterance. Put Dialog in Order using BOR _____ : No, I’m fine. I’ve just been watching a sad film, that’s all. _____ : Who? Oh, him. No, I haven’t thought about him all day, actually. _____ : Marina, your phone…. It’s ringing. Aren’t you going to answer it? _____ : No, it’s not true. I’ve been trying to get through to him all day. _____ : Oh, I see. Tell me, have you head anything from Andrew today? _____ : No, I’ve left about ten messages on this voice mail. Oh, why doesn’t he phone? _____ : Oh, really? So you’ve forgotten about him already, have you? _____ : Hi, Marina … what’s the matter? You’ve been crying again, haven’t you? _____ : Haven’t you managed to speak to him, then?

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The answers to the dialog are : 2 : No, I’m fine. I’ve just been watching a sad film, that’s all. 4 : Who? Oh, him. No, I haven’t thought about him all day, actually. 9 : Marina, your phone…. It’s ringing. Aren’t you going to answer it? 6 : No, it’s not true. I’ve been trying to get through to him all day. 3 : Oh, I see. Tell me, have you heard anything from Andrew today? 8 : No, I’ve left about ten messages on this voice mail. Oh, why doesn’t he phone? 5 : Oh, really? So you’ve forgotten about him already, have you? 1 : Hi, Marina … what’s the matter? You’ve been crying again, haven’t you? 7 : Haven’t you managed to speak to him, then?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Here, the students will be given a short lecture on the difference between past continuous and the simple past with illustrations and examples. Students are then provided a Google Worksheet where they can choose the best sentence to describe the action illustrated in the image. There are 6 images with 2 choices present for each.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are then placed back into BOR (depending on number of students) to complete the following sentences based on their own experiences. The amount of time should be 8-10 minutes but may be adjusted depending on how much time is available. Find Someone who ….. Has lost / has been losing some money recently Has changed / has been changing their hairstyle in the last few months Has gone / has been going out a lot recently Has felt / has been feeling tired this week Has broken / has been breaking an arm or a leg Has passed / has been passing an important exam this year Has studied / has been studying a lot recently Has already done / has already been doing all their homework this week Has spent / has been spending a lot of money recently Has been / has been going abroad this year Has forgotten / has been forgetting things recently Has left / has been living something important at home today

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

With the remaining time, students will again move into BOR where they can discuss the following questions using both the present perfect and present continuous. What is something you started doing this week that you haven’t yet finished? What is something that you have finished doing this week? What is a healthy habit that you do at least once a week? What is a habit that you try to do every week?
