Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus student's attention on the questions and images on the screen. Ask: Do you ever chew gum? Does it help you in any way? Why do you think that some people object to people chewing gum? Provide an example: I don't really chew gum because growing up my mum didn't like it when I did as she thought it looked unprofessional. However, I have noticed that chewing gum sometimes helps me with my anxiety. In pairs (BOR) have students discuss their personal answers to these questions. (2 min)

Exposure (6-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Provide the students with the gist task (google forms) and explain that they will read a text and then they will try and figure out what the correct title for the text is. (2 min) Answer: Chewing gum can aid memory. Provide the students with the intensive reading task (google forms) and explain that in pairs (BOR) that they will work together to try and figure out if the underlined sections of text A are indirect articles, definite articles or nouns with no articles. (4 min) Answers: 1. Noun with no article 2. Indefinite article 3. Nouns with no article 4. Definite article 5. Indefinite article 6. Nouns without an article 7. Definite articles 8. Noun without an article 9. Definite article

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language and provide basic MFP

Draw students attention to the target language: a new study, the author, people. Focus on the pronunciation of these words providing IPA. (2 min) Then move on to the meaning and form by doing a whole class matching exercise. Nominate individual students to match the term, with their respective definitions and image. (2 min) Ask CCQ (2 min) A new study A new study tries to find new information about a subject or goes over old information about a subject? Answer: New information. Is it a noun? Answer: Yes What type of article is it paired with? Answer: Indefinite article The author What is a synonym for the author? Answer: Writer Is it a noun? Answer: Yes What type of article is it paired with? Answer: Definite article People Is people a noun? Answer: yes Is it plural? Answer: yes Why doesn’t it need an article? Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Provide the students with the clarification task (google forms) and explain that in pairs (BOR) that they will work together to try and figure out when we use the indirect articles, definite articles or nouns with no articles. (6 min) Then go over the answers with them in OCFB (2 min) Answers:

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Provide the students with the controlled practice (google forms) and explain that in pairs (BOR) that they will work together to try and figure out when we use the indirect articles, definite articles or nouns with no articles. (6 min) Then go over the answers with them in OCFB (2 min) Answers:

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Provide students with a link to Kahoots and the code. Explain to them we will be doing a general knowledge quiz, and then nominate a student to fill in the blanks for each question with either indefinite articles, definite articles or no article.
