ELEMENTARY (A2/B1) level

Description

In this lesson ss will have an opportunity to practice their speaking skills in the context of things to do on holidays

Materials

Abc google slides
Abc google forms
Abc Face to face elementary, p. 72

Main Aims

  • To provide students with an opportunity to practice their fluency speaking skills in the context of things to do on holiday/planning an ideal holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to clarify and practice some new lexis, as well as expressing likes and dislikes in the context of holidays.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

For the Lead in stage I will show the students different pictures of holiday activities, namely camping, sightseeing, having a picnic, relaxing on the beach and doing a guided tour in a a museum. I will share a link to Google slides and will ask ss to place love hearts on their favourite activity asking them to justify their choice.

Exposure -content preparation- (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production -expected in the speaking stage- and give ss ideas through a short reading

I will ask ss to read a short dialogue between 3 friends talking about their Summer holidays and the things they are planning to do. I will ask ss to read in 2 minutes to get a general idea. I will then ask them to briefly discuss which of the 3 friends they agree with, in a further 3 minutes.

Useful Language -language preparation MAPF- (6-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify some functional language for coming productive tasks

I will share link to Google forms where the ss will have to classify 9 collocations/phrases according to their function, i.e. expressing like, dislike, type of holiday and holiday activity. I will do the first one as an example, in BOR for 1 or 2 min. I will then redirect ss to Google Slides to highlight the appropriacy, pronunciation features and form of some useful functional language in the context of holidays, in open class for 4-5 min.

Productive Task(s) (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will ask the students to tell each other, in pairs, about a dream holiday they would like to enjoy, or a perfect holiday they have enjoyed already. SS to discuss in BOR for a minimum of 15 minutes (20 minutes time permitting). I will advise them that after 5 minutes I will place them in another BOR with another peer to enable them to hopefully emulate good language and consolidate their discussions (2 or 3 times if time allows). For the purpose of facilitating their discussion, I will provide ss with a suggested list of types of holidays, methods of transport and activities to do on holiday.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will ask ss to share their stories or planned holidays, giving everyone an opportunity to tell their peers in open class. I will finally provide ss with delayed error correction (on Zoom board), asking them to reformulate the structure/sentences they said incorrectly, eliciting the right form/ pronunciation from them and/or asking CCQ so that they can hopefully work out and correct the error for themselves.
