Revising & contrasting verbs: ing- & to
Pre-Intermediate (A2) level

Description

In this lesson, students will begin by watching a short clip about ordering in a restaurant. The clip will be paused and they will have to think about what will happen next. This will make them think and lead-in to the lessonĀ“s main aim of revising & contrasting verbs -ing & to. The students will then receive a Google Form and will have to answer the questions while reading the text. Marker sentences will be used to explain the grammar points of verbs with -ing & to. This will be followed by MFP. After that there will be controlled practise of the lesson topic followed by freer practise. This will ensure that they have practised the grammar points while also improving their verbal communication skills.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

YouTube part of clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSkJwmO2lO0 Video is paused as waiter arrives to the table. Students have to guess what the waiter is going to ask them .. Answer: "Good evening, are you ready to order?" Students will discuss in breakout rooms.

Presentation through the text (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through the main text.

Students will receive a copy of the text and will have to answer on Google forms with the correct option. This activity will enable them to identify the grammar point. Marker sentences help learners understand the structure, use and meaning of new language. Students will complete this activity individually. This will be followed by peer-checking and OCFB. Teacher will share an answer key.

Clarification (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to M F P

Meaning - highlighted words will be explained in sentences. Form - grammar rules will be outlined. Students should take notes. Pronunciation - selecting the correct pronunciation, followed by individually pronuncing word and finalising it chorally. Google slides will be used.

Controlled practise (6-8 minutes) • Providing controlled practise of the language

Making use of exercise 9a on p. 37 to provide controlled practice of the language via Google Forms. Students do this individually and then check in pairs via breakout room. Followed by answer key & OCFB.

Free practise (8-10 minutes) • To ensure students practise the TL in a communicative manner

Students will discuss with their peers: "What recent changes to your life have you made?" (ensure to answer where? what? why/ why not?) Via breakout rooms. Followed by open class discussion as to what they found most surprising about their partner. The question will be placed on a Google Slide.
