Teaching Practice 1
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will understand the difference between the present continuous and simple present and use them in the context of wedding

Materials

Main Aims

  • To review and practice the use of the present continuous to talk about things happening now and around now in the context of wedding

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students semi-controlled speaking practice to develop their spoken accuracy

Procedure

Warm up (5-5 minutes) • To get the students ready to use present continuous

By miming and using students activities unconsciously I might ask some of students to come on the board and act something out.

Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • Analyse the language and prepare the students for speaking

I start with a game by dividing them into 4 groups. Each group has a piece of paper including 2 jumbled sentences. They need to put the words in the correct order and then come to the WB and write them. After that I get their attention to the difference of present continuous and simple present.

Focus on meaning and form (10-10 minutes) • Get students to tell me about state verbs

In this part I elicit what the tenses are and what the difference in meaning is between present continuous and present simple and I try to get them tell me some sentences with state verbs. Giving them a hand-out to check the grammar of the sentences

Controlled Practice (5-5 minutes) • To check students understanding of grammar

I ask them to do the Ex. 2 on page 39 in pairs and then get the whole class feedback to check their answers.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (5-5 minutes) • To enable students to learn vocab which is necessary for the speaking task

Using flashcards and pictures, elicit and drill words 'knife' , 'balloon' , 'suit' , 'bow-tie'

Semi Controlled Speaking Practice (10-15 minutes) • Preparing students to use present continuous

Asking them to look at the picture and make 5 questions in present continuous In order to make sure they are in the right track, I make an example myself to create a good model. They work in pairs and then I switch the partners to check their answers. Finally I get the feedback.

Optional Filler • To enable the students to speak more on wedding

Getting students to work in small groups and do the activity 'Did you know?' on page 39.
