Vocabulary
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson: Ss will have a Lead-in about the aim of the lesson "vocabulary". It's about a picture about idioms. To prepare them for the topic, I’ll give them a context that has some phrases to know. For controlled practice, Ss will answer the question 3 at SB p.107. For semi controlled practice, Ss will answer a question about completing the sentences by using their own words. For free practice, I will ask them to work in pairs to write a short story by using the idioms at the clarification stage. The last will be the feedback.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context.

-T greets Ss and shows Ss a picture about an idiom. -Ss are given from two to three minutes to discuss the picture by asking some CCQs like: What can you see here? Can you describe the picture? What do you think if we say "It rains cats and dogs"? What we call it? - T elicits from the answers that Ss have an idea about the topic "Idioms".

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T tells a story to his Ss about the target language. it begins like that "Yesterday, I was driving my car. suddenly, it stopped. I don't know why? I tried to fix it but I couldn't as my car has done over 500,000 km. It's on its last legs now. I saw a man near me. I asked him, "Can you give me a hand?". He directly shook hands with me!!!!! Do you think this is what I meant? T asks Ss "Do you think this is what I meant?" T elicits from Ss the answers until they say this is an idiom.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T uses the same story at the exposure stage. T writes it without pictures. T asks Ss to highlight the idioms and make underline. T elicits the answers from the students.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-T gives Ss context contains the target language of "idioms". The target language of this lesson is studying these phrases "on its last legs, face the fact, goes to their heads, a sharp tongue, putting a brave face, pulling your leg, finding my feet". -Ss will elicit the meanings of these phrases. T will make correction for the students’ answers. T will ask students to drill the phrases to make sure of their pronunciation for these phrases.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T asks Ss to answer the question at task 3 p.107 at SB "Fill in the gaps". T sends Ss to BORs for five minutes to complete the sentences with the best answer. T chooses Ss to answer. T checks the answers of the students.

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T asks Ss to answer a question about completing the sentences by using your own words. T asks Ss to answer the question by using idioms. T sends Ss to BORs for five minutes to answer the question. T checks the answers of Ss.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language
