Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will have been able to use their productive speaking skills in the context of did/ did not.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask the students how many times they've used Google today. Show them a picture of Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Do you recognize these people? Do you know who they are? Explain that they are the two men who invented Google.

Test #1 Gist Task (3-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Give the students a small article to read about Page and Bring. Have them fill out a True or False worksheet about what they've read. Check in pairs. Show an answer sheet.

Teach (10-12 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Start pulling statements from the true or false worksheet and elicit grammar rules from the students. Drill the sentence before writing it down. Teaching did/ did not, irregular verbs. Break the sentence structures down. Focus on sentence stress.

Test #2 Semi-controlled practice (6-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Have the students answer yes they did, no they didn't to the answers on the worksheet. Students must read the questions to their partners and answer in complete sentences.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Number 10 from page 49 Face2Face Elementary SB. Have the students read the questions to one another and answer in complete sentences. Turn it into a mingle sessions, students must ask the questions to all the students in the room and elicit full sentences from them. Help your classmates if necessary.

Error Correction (5-8 minutes) • Clarify any confusion the students may still have when using the grammar rules of Past Simple

After monitoring throughout the freer practice and taking notes, I'll use what I've heard and have them look at a few sentences that I'll write on the board. I'll elicit error correction from the students and further their comprehension of the grammar rules.
