Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and gist reading practice using a text about words related to shopping in the context of shopping in stores and nline shopping

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of shopping words in the context of shopping in stores and online shopping.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will greet students and share images of three famous places for shopping in my hometown (Lima) which are different from each other. After telling Ss the names I will share a slide with two questions: 1 Do you like shopping for clothes? 2 What's your favourite item? Students will participate answering one or the two questions

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will share a slide with four different words: Fashion magazines, designer clothes, send back and try on. There will be four images that students will have to match to the previous words. Ss will participate meanwhile I match the words with the corresponding picture. The words will be stressed and there will be choral repetition to practice pronunciation of words. After that I will show a similar slide where words and pictures are already matched but this time I will include two boxes with useful language. The first one contains the phrases I USUALLY... I SOMETIMES... I NEVER The other box contains suggested verbs like READ, BUY, WEAR. Students will be given time to create simple sentences combining elements from the two boxes e.g. I NEVER BUY DESIGNER CLOTHES.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will show a slide with a text and three pictures of three different people. Students will read for gist and match each paragraph to the corresponding person. After that they will do peer checking using private messages on Zoom. Then I will provide class feedback.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

This time students will read in a more detailed way because they will need to answer nine questions in which they have to identify which character matches the description given in each question. Once they have finished reading, they will work in pairs and check their answers. After that, feedback will be given

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will share a slide with three questions: 1 Which person from the article is similar to you? Why? 2 What’s your favourite clothes shop? What do you usually buy there? 3 Do you buy clothes online? Why?/Why not? Students will share ideas on Breakout rooms. Once they are back, they will report their ideas. I will put another slide with useful language to help students report: ___________ is similar to… because… _________’s favourite clothes shop is… _________ usually buys… __________ buys clothes online. Her favourite site is... __________ doesn’t buy clothes online (because) Once participation is over, I will give feedback. There will be also Language Feedback using the virtual board. Finally I will tell Ss that class is over and I will thank all of them
