TP1 receptive (reading) skills lesson
elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to improve their reading skills through reading a text about life in the city versus the country. They will be introduced to three new vocabulary words and then be able to practice their reading skills through two reading tasks

Materials

Main Aims

  • To enable students to improve their reading for gist and detail skills through reading about life in the country versus life in the city in the context of two accounts from two different people

Subsidiary Aims

Perhaps the most important element of any plan is the part where we say what our aims are.Jeremy Harmer in The Practice of English Language Teaching

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by asking the class two questions: Would you rather live in the city or in the country? How is life different in the city and the country? I will go through every student and make sure to elicit at least one answer from each student.

Pre-teach Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To familiarize students with the MFP of select vocabulary words

We will go over this vocabulary set Decided – to make a final choice about Moment –one point in time, a short period of time Crowded – filled with many or too many people or things

While-Reading #1 (5-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading task

Students will answer simple questions about the text. There will be several statements, and students will chose whether Neil or Barry would agree with them. Afterward, students will share their answers with a partner on private zoom chat, and then go over them together as a class.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will reread the passage and answer more difficult comprehension questions about the text. Afterward, students will share answers with a partner via private zoom chat before going over the answers together in class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In breakout rooms, students will answer and discuss the following questions with each other, before sharing their answers together with the class. Do you live in the city or the country? What is your area like? Do you like where you live? Why?/Why not? Would you like to move to a different place? Where to? Why?
